Brief Biographical Sketch


Dr. Thurman B. Everett is the son of the late Thomas and Lena Everett of Leland, North Carolina. The eleventh born of twelve children, he accepted Jesus Christ at the age of 14. He completed high school at Lincoln High School of Leland, N.C. and upon graduation he went on to play semi-pro baseball in the American Negro League with such teams as the Philadelphia Stars of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and the Champagne Eagles of Champagne, Illinois. After a short-lived baseball career he moved to Newark, New Jersey, where he lived and worked until 1966, he entered the United States Army and spent 20 honorable years in the service of his country. He retired with the rank of Master Sergeant (E8).

    During his last military assignment in Atlanta, Georgia, Dr. Everett accepted the call to join the Army of the Lord as a Proclaimer of the Gospel of the Jesus Christ. Upon this acceptance he quit one army to join another. He currently serves as Pastor of Bryant Swamp Missionary Baptist Church, Bladenboro, North Carolina. He is a former member of the Executive  Management Committee of The General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina. He is the former Chairman of The Housing Committee of The General Baptist State Convention, serving some 600,000 members. He is the former Vice Moderator of the Lumber River Baptist Association. He is teacher of biblical doctrine to all Pastors and Ministers of the Lumber River Baptist Association. He is the Professor of Religious Studies at Bryant Swamp Institute of Theology and accredited extension of Cathedral Baptist College of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a member of the Lumber River Ministerial A lliance, member of Columbus/Bladen County Men's Union, and serves as a Black History lecture.

     Dr. Everett also served as the Executive Director of the Brunswick County Public Housing Agency, where he managed a 1.8 million-dollar annual budget. He planned, authorized, coordinated and directed all programs and policies administered by the Housing Agency. He is the co-founder of the House Construction Program adopted and implemented in the Brunswick County school system. He is the founder of Helping Hands in Brunswick County, a nationally recognized non-profit organization.

     Dr. Everett is a former member of the Board of Directors of Four County Community Services of Laurinburg, North Carolina, a former member of the National Association of Housing Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Washington, D.C., former member of Board of Trustees with Communities in Schools (CIS). He is a life member of the NAACP of Wilmington, North Carolina. Dr. Everett is a graduate of Cathedral Bible College of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, having received the Doctor of Theology in Ministry (May 18, 2008), The Doctor of Divinity Degree (May 15, 1999), the Master of Theology (May 15, 1999), and the Bachelor of Theology (May 16, 1998).  He holds and Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters for the Tri-County Bible College and Seminary of Maxton, North Carolina (May 10, 1998). He has also received an Associate of Arts Degree from Saint Leo College of Saint Leo, Florida (January 1, 1983), and has pursued religious studies with Shaw University at Cape Fear, Wilmington, North Carolina.

     Dr. Everett served as the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina housing chairman, responsible to some 600,000 members. In this capacity, he was directly responsible for the publication of the book entitled: "Your First Home", a resource guide to home ownership. This book was distributed throughout the membership of General Baptist State Convention free of charge. It was so well received, a second printing had to be done to meet the demand.

     Dr. Everett led the efforts to purchase 21 lots in Princeville, North Carolina. For the construction of Homes for Hurricane Floyd Survivors, to date 15 homes are completed. He also worked with the Housing Rehabilitation following the flood. To help raise funds to defray cost for this effort, he introduced to General Baptist State Convention the Change for Change Program where each member was asked to give ten cents (.10) a day for 30 days. The ten cents a day times 600,000 members would generate 60,000 dollars per month and 720,000 dollars per year.

     Dr. Everett also led the efforts to purchase 138 acres of land in Navassa, North Carolina. He then wrote a grant for infrastructure that sewer, water, streets with curbs and gutters could be constructed. This project was completed for the first twenty-five houses, March 2003. When the total project is completed, Dr. Everett projected that there will be 147 new single family houses. Dr. Everett introduced what was known as the General Baptist State Convention Housing Banquet held annually. This banquet has featured: The Honorable Martin Luther King, III, world renowned Attorney Willie Gary, the Rev. Al Sharpton, candidate for the President of the United Sates of America, and the Honorable William Jefferson Clinton, the 42nd President of the United States of America and the Rev. Jessie Jackson, CEO Rainbow Coalition, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Everett has personally briefed the following of the General Baptist State Convention Housing initiative:

·                                 Dr. Everett attended the African American Leadership Summit, held in Washington, D.C., sponsored by U.S. Senators and Staff of President George W. Bush
·                                 Dr. Everett was appointed by Governor Michael F. Easley as a member of the N.C. Advisory Council on Hurricane Floyd Housing Recovery (June 14, 2001)
·                                 Dr. Everett and the Bryant Swamp Church family was featured in the Spring of 2006 Edition of the Lott Carey Herald for the outstanding effort of letting supplies to Hurricane Rita and Katrina survivors after the Gulf Coast was devastated. Three tractor/trailer loads of food and supplies were delivered to churches in Shreveport and New Orleans between October and December 2005

    Dr. Everett has also traveled to various parts of the free world including: Thailand, Vietnam, Pakistan, India, Turkey, Germany, France, Belgium, Holland, Scotland, Wales, Guam, Philippines, Japan, Korea, England, Mexico and Canada. He also visited most of the states in the Unites States including Hawaii and Alaska. Dr. Everett has visited the White House on special invitation extended by President William Jefferson Clinton.

     Dr. Everett is married to the former Wilhelmenia Sanders of South Carolina. They have one daughter, three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.
